There’s been a lot of news and conflicting reports on the status of vacation rentals on Oahu. Simply put, the vast majority of Oahu vacation rentals now require a 30 day stay. There are a few exceptions to this, but generally speaking, State and County laws dictate that only one party can occupy a vacation home over a 30-day period. This means if a vacation rental was to accommodate your request for a one week’s stay, the other three weeks in the month could not be rented out to someone else. The fines for not following these laws can run many thousands of dollars a day and can far exceed the income your one-week stay might have brought in. It also explains why vacation rentals are priced where they are. Here are two things to look for to ensure your stay in Hawaii is unaffected by these recent changes:
- Ask for the property’s Transient Accommodation License Number (it starts with TA). This means the property is legal but requires a 30 day stay. Make sure the property you are thinking of renting has a TA License number.
- Ask for the property’s Transient Vacation Unit Permit Number (it will have TVU in it). This means the property is licensed for stays less than 30 days. Most vacation properties will NOT have a TVU permit and require stays of 30 days or more.
The adjacent town of Kailua provides shopping for essentials and gifts, additional dining options and nightlife settings as well as kayak, stand-up paddleboard and kiteboard rentals and instructions. A day trip up the windward coast will take you to the North Shore—home to big wave surfing. Or you can take the highway over the Ko’olau Mountains to Honolulu, Diamond Head and Waikiki.
